KNEE

GENERAL KNEE INJURIES (Your knee hurts)-  The knee joint is a very complex joint structure.  There are numerous joints/muscles/ligaments/bones/tissues that support this joint and allow it to function properly.  Knee pain can be caused by either an acute or chronic injury.  There are several common injuries that we see on a consistent basis, including:

Runners Knee (Iliotibial band syndrome or knee pain from running)
When the ilitibial band rubs on the outside of the joint.  Classified as an overuse injury.

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
A overuse injury with pain originating from the patella or kneecap. Common to see in runners.

Chondromalacia Patellae
When there is damage to the cartilage lining that is in the back of the patella.

Osgood Schlatters Disease
Typically seen in young people going through a growth spurt, Osgood Schlatters is classified as an overuse injury.  Pain is felt below the knee and can become worse with activity.  Active Release Techniques is extremely effective for this condition.

Jumpers knee (patella tendon inflammation)
Caused from a partial rupture of the patella tendon or inflammation of the tendon.

Medial Ligament Sprain
Common in contact sports, a Medial Ligament Sprain is usually caused by direct impact to the outside of the knee which causes a tear or sprain.

Pes Anserine Bursitis / Tendinopathy
Pain that gradually builds on the inner, lower part of the knee.

Lateral Ligament Sprain
Typically caused by the direct impact to ligament which causes it to over-stretch, tear, or sprain.
